Musical Alphabet - K

Here are three "K"-themed artists for your listening pleasure.

Kid Harpoon - Milkmaid

If there were such a thing as a single song that qualified as an acoustic rock opera, "Milkmaid" would fit the bill. I included it in one of my "Best Songs You've Never Heard" annual countdowns the year it was released. One friend after another would come to me after listening to the fifty song countdown and ask, "Do you have anything else by the guy who does the Milkmaid song?" It gets stuck in your head an is the one track that people still talk about years later.

Head Like a Kite - Director's Cut

When Beck released "Odelay" in 1996 I had no idea how to describe the album. It wasn't rap or pop or electronic or rock - but it was parts of all of those things. In much the same way, Seattle's Head Like a Kite leaves me unable to categorize the band, the song, or the album it comes from. It's rap, but it's more than that. It's electronic, but not really. It's rock, but only sorta.

If you like the track, the mp3 is available as a free download via www.headlikeakite.com. Be warned, you do have to supply your email address and follow the link from the subsequent email.

Kan'nal - Time

Formed in Guatemala in 2001, Kan'nal is often described as a psychedelic rock band, but this track (one of my favorites by them) is simple, soft, and acoustic. On a personal note, one of these days I'm going to sit down with a guitar and take my turn at "open mic night" at a local coffee house. When I do, this is one of the songs I'm going to cover.

  2. Though I've never heard of any of these musicians before, I liked all of 'em. Thanks for opening my ears to something new. On the acoustic guitar ... my old guitar was all but falling apart, so I treated myself to a new one. My son-in-law was utterly appalled when I immediately replaced the steel strings with nylon ones.

Susan: I'm glad you're enjoying them. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow as I get to share a couple of my favorite female artists. :)

  7. I have never heard of any of these before, but I love Progressive Rock, and I have been to Guatemala 5 times too, so I can't imagine what this band sounds like. Will listen tonight when I have speakers on.
